The George fourth graders constructed and decorated a gingerbread house during December. This project was started 20 years ago to go with the novel The War With Grandpa. This story is about the struggle a grandson (Peter) goes through when his room is given to his grandfather who is moving in with them. Through the whole “war,” Peter is spending time with his grandfather, although not always in the normal ways. The decorating of the gingerbread house is a way for the fourth-grader as a grandchild to spend one-on-one time with grandparents. Mr. Heyer cuts out the cardboard pieces that are glued with frosting to the gingerbread pieces, moms or grandmothers come to school to roll out the pieces to be baked, one of Mrs. Johnson’s high school math classes comes over for 2 days to help the students construct their houses, and the grandparents (or parents) help their child decorate the house. The houses are then displayed at Security Savings Bank before going home with each child.
